Men, Violence and Testosterone by Scott Spencer - Oprah.com

Men, Violence and Testosterone by Scott Spencer - Oprah.com: The simple truth is that men are somewhat violent, even those of us who abhor violence.

We believe that we would, or should, be willing to die or kill for those we love. Even if we are cerebral, out of shape, or blind in one eye, many of us expect of ourselves levels of daring and aggression that would quite frankly horrify most women, if it didn't reduce them to helpless laughter

Strange but True: Testosterone Alone Does Not Cause Violence: Scientific American

Strange but True: Testosterone Alone Does Not Cause Violence: Scientific American: It's commonly assumed that testosterone, that stereotypically male hormone, is intimately tied to violence. The evidence is all around us: weight lifters who overdose on anabolic steroids experience "roid rage," and castration—the removal of the source of testosterone—has been a staple of animal husbandry for centuries.

Brainstorm - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Brainstorm - The Chronicle of Higher Education: "Yesterday people started sending me emails about how Andrew Breivik, the Oslo mass murderer, had specifically targeted left-wing journalists and professors as well as feminists in his 1,000 page manifesto, 2083, A European Declaration of Independence.
Let me be clear. The real motivation behind Breivik’s attack was racism and xenophobia, pure and simple. But he saw the problem as not the Other coming to Europe, but Europeans letting the Other in. In particular, Breivik blamed “cultural marxism” and “feminism” for diminishing the ability of Europeans to create strong nationalist movements and strong men that would keep the Other out of Europe in the first place."

Blog U.: An Unspoken Threat - University of Venus - Inside Higher Ed

Blog U.: An Unspoken Threat - University of Venus - Inside Higher Ed: "am not the kind of person who feels uncomfortable about confrontations. I don’t go looking for them, but I don’t shrink from them either. When students inappropriately challenge me in class I usually deal with them without too much of a hassle. Yes, I feel annoyed when it happens. And my first thought usually is, would he (it is most often a male student) be doing this or saying this if I were a white man? But then things settle down and I can almost forget that I am a young female faculty of color. Almost."

Barbara Talks To A Professor Studying Latina Adolescent Suicide

Guanabee | Barbara Talks To A Professor Studying Latina Adolescent Suicide: "At 21%, the suicide rate for Latina adolescents is twice as high as that of whites and blacks. That's something Professor Luis H. Zayas has been studying for 20 years during his career as a social worker and developmental psychologist. Zayas, who’s of Puerto Rican descent, founded and now serves as the director of the Center for Latino Family Research at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri."

Latinas and Suicide - The Pursuit of Harpyness

Latinas and Suicide - The Pursuit of Harpyness: "Over on Barbara, Guanabee’s ladyblog, there was a brief but thought-provoking interview with Professor Luis Zayas, director of the Center for Latino Family Research at Washington University in St. Louis. Zayas has been studying the unusually high rate of suicide attempts among teenage Latinas, estimated at about 15%, which is double that of their white and African-American counterparts. Results of his study seem to be typical of all Hispanic groups in the United States — Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, etc. — but doesn’t hold true for these groups within their home countries, meaning suicide rates for all these groups are higher in the U.S. Professor Zayas attributes this to multiple intersectionalities: immigration, poverty, low access to health care, language barriers, and a lack of extended family as well as the rigid gender roles typical of Latino culture."

Freedom From the Known - Jiddu Krishnamurti

Freedom From the Known - Jiddu Krishnamurti: "FEAR, PLEASURE, SORROW, thought and violence are all interrelated. Most of us take pleasure in violence, in disliking somebody, hating a particular race or group of people, having antagonistic feelings towards others. But in a state of mind in which all violence has come to an end there is a joy which is very different from the pleasure of violence with its conflicts, hatreds and fears."

Newsvine - Myths of 19th Century Science: The Indo-European Invasions

Newsvine - Myths of 19th Century Science: The Indo-European Invasions: "'The theory of invasion is an invention. This invention is necessary because of a gratuitous assumption that the Indo-Germanic people are the purest of the modern representation of the original Aryan race. The theory is a perversion of scientific investigation. It is not allowed to evolve out of facts. On the contrary, the theory is preconceived and facts are selected to prove it. It falls to the ground at every point.' – Dr. B. R. Ambedkar"

The Grail Quest and The Destiny of Man - The Chalice and The Blade by Laura Knight-Jadczyk

The Grail Quest and The Destiny of Man - The Chalice and The Blade by Laura Knight-Jadczyk: "Riane Eisler writes in her revelatory work, The Chalice and The Blade:

'Why do we hunt and persecute each other? Why is our world so full of man's infamous inhumanity to man - and to woman? How can human beings be so brutal to their own kind? What is it that chronically tilts us toward cruelty rather than kindness, toward war rather than peace, toward destruction rather than actualization?"

Look Ahead in Anger - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Look Ahead in Anger - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education: "Five months ago, Andrew Joseph Stack III, a middle-aged man who had a long-running dispute over taxes with the federal government, flew a kamikaze mission into the IRS building in Austin, Tex. On the Internet, numerous bloggers immediately declared Stack a hero, a martyr in the war against Big Government."

Films for Action - Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity

Films for Action - Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity: "Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century."
