EARTHQUAKES: USGS to make separate risk map for man-made quakes -- Monday, December 23, 2013 -- www.eenews.net

EARTHQUAKES: USGS to make separate risk map for man-made quakes -- Monday, December 23, 2013 -- www.eenews.net: Federal officials are wrestling with how to account for the hazard created by man-made earthquakes, many of which are triggered by oil and gas activities.

In the past, the U.S. Geological Survey has generally excluded shaking related to industrial activity from its earthquake hazard maps. The maps project the likelihood of large, natural earthquakes and are used to develop building codes, plan roads and bridges, and set insurance rates.

Monster Sinkholes An Indication That Major Earth Changes Are Coming Along The New Madrid Fault? | Pakalert Press

Monster Sinkholes An Indication That Major Earth Changes Are Coming Along The New Madrid Fault? | Pakalert Press: The most powerful earthquakes in the history of the United States happened along the New Madrid Fault in 1811 and 1812. Those earthquakes were reportedly felt more than 1,000 miles away. Scientists assure us that one day we will once again see very powerful earthquakes along the New Madrid fault

15 Nuclear Reactors on New Madrid Fault Line -- Society's Child -- Sott.net

15 Nuclear Reactors on New Madrid Fault Line -- Society's Child -- Sott.net: Bob Nations, Jr., the Director of Shelby County Office of Preparedness, says that since the lack of preparation exposed by Hurricane Katrina, he is "preparing for the catastrophic event" in his six-county jurisdiction.

Nations admitted that after a major quake, Tennessee's infrastructure and response capabilities "would get overwhelmed fairly quickly."

There are 15 nuclear power plants in the New Madrid fault zone -- three reactors in Alabama -- that are of the same or similar design as the site in Japan experiencing problems.

Landon Jones: The New Madrid Earthquake: 200 Years Later

Landon Jones: The New Madrid Earthquake: 200 Years Later: If you think this week's East Coast tremblor was disconcerting, consider that this is the 200th anniversary of the Mother of All American Earthquakes.
About 2 a.m. in the early morning of December 16, 1811, the young painter John James Audubon was riding across the Big Barrens, a large grassland in western Kentucky, when his horse suddenly froze and splayed out its legs as if walking on a smooth sheet of ice. "At that instant all the shrubs and trees began to move from their very roots," Audubon recalled. "The ground rose and fell in successive furrows, like the ruffled waters of a lake."
