Religious Fundamentalism and its Impact on the Female Gender

Religious Fundamentalism and its Impact on the Female Gender: Whether the mother is depressed and withdrawn or dominating and angry, the extremely vulnerable baby and young child fears being killed or abandoned by her, and this fear of imminent death is embedded in the brain in a dissociated alter in its right hemisphere, where it is unavailable for correction as the child grows up.1
Psychoanalysts have begun to address the fact that many of their patients continue to fear and defend against early death dealing Killer Mother alters that remain in a cut-off dissociated state in their psyches. Joseph Rheingold, a psychiatrist writing in the 1960's emphasized the child's terror of being violently killed by his or her mother who wished him or her dead and shows that the child, therefore, concludes that it must be because he or she is bad and that "by dying the child appeases the mother and hopes to gain her affection."2
Rheingold sees this not only a source of suicide and other destructive behavior but as the ultimate source of religion in rebirth fantasies such as the Christian and Islamic wish to die and be merged with God/Allah, shouting "Allahu Akbar," God is Great, "the Killer Mother is great", where, "mother's love is the prize of death." 3

Our Entire Belief System Must Change - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com

Our Entire Belief System Must Change - Room for Debate - NYTimes.com: I was raised to believe I was equal and discovered, working in movies, that this wasn’t true. I’ve spent my life trying to change that. Though female directors are now a small part of the industry, we are an invisible minority. Even in government, we lack representation. It feels like we’ve gone backward. The cultural dismissal of women is so ingrained that the public, including women, doesn’t seem to perceive a problem.

Alice Dreger: Is anatomy destiny? | Video on TED.com: Alice Dreger works with people at the edge of anatomy, such as conjoined twins and intersexed people. In her observation, it's often a fuzzy line between male and female, among other anatomical distinctions. Which brings up a huge question: Why do we let our anatomy determine our fate?

We Need Marriage Like We Need Yachts

The release last week of the Time/Pew poll on the state of marriage in the US has created a media frenzy. Everyone is bemoaning the fact that marriage is now, according to the Time article on the poll,

the relationship equivalent of a luxury yacht — hard to get, laborious to maintain but a better vessel to be on when there are storms at sea — its status is unlikely to drop. As it stands, the way America marries is making the American Dream unreachable for many of its people.

Men Are From Mars -- Neuroscientists Find That Men And Women Respond Differently To Stress: "April 1, 2008 — Functional magnetic resonance imaging of men and women under stress showed neuroscientists how their brains differed in response to stressful situations. Blog U.: An Unspoken Threat - University of Venus - Inside Higher Ed

Blog U.: An Unspoken Threat - University of Venus - Inside Higher Ed: "am not the kind of person who feels uncomfortable about confrontations. I don’t go looking for them, but I don’t shrink from them either. When students inappropriately challenge me in class I usually deal with them without too much of a hassle. Yes, I feel annoyed when it happens. And my first thought usually is, would he (it is most often a male student) be doing this or saying this if I were a white man? But then things settle down and I can almost forget that I am a young female faculty of color. Almost."

How gender is created during everyday life at preschool

How gender is created during everyday life at preschool: "Whether you're a boy or a girl doesn't really matter when it comes to being allowed to join in -- what really counts is your haircut, clothes and gender markers, reveals a thesis from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, that examines how gender is created during everyday life at preschool. The study also shows that stereotypical perceptions about gender are allowed to steer the planning of preschool activities."

Manliness, Part II: What Is Courage? | Feminist Law Professors

Manliness, Part II: What Is Courage? | Feminist Law Professors: "As Bridget pointed out, in the news recently, we have seen a terrible episode involving young, presumably heterosexual, men who tortured gay men in the Bronx. It is an appalling example of hypermasculinity where violent cruelty is its own reward. Mayor Bloomberg aptly observed: “What kind of twisted logic spurs a large group of men to show off their toughness by ganging up on helpless individuals? That’s not showing you’re tough, that’s just showing that you’re weak and despicable.”"

Women and Equality — Gender-Based Analysis, Law, and Economic Rights, October 22-23, 2010 |Feminist Law Professors

Women and Equality — Gender-Based Analysis, Law, and Economic Rights, October 22-23, 2010 |Feminist Law Professors: "Long before the 2008 global economic crisis occurred, women in large economies began to see the promise of equality eroding. ‘Economic crisis’ policies have done nothing to reverse that trend. For example, a decade ago, the US and Canada were ranked 3rd and 1st on the UN gender-related development index; by 2009, they had already fallen to 19th and 4th, respectively, and are ranked much lower on newer equality-specific indexes. Similar patterns can be seen in the UK and many European countries."
