What Contact Lens Wearers Must Know

"Q: I like wearing contact lenses, but I’ve had several eye infections. Why does this happen—and how can I keep this from happening again?

A: First, always wash your hands before touching your lenses to prevent contamination—and do not use a moisturizing soap on your hands because it can leave a residue that invites infection by causing buildup on your lenses. Never reuse or 'top off' your cleaning or soaking solution. Rinse your lens case daily with hot tap water, and replace the case monthly even if it seems fine. In many cases of eye infection involving the cornea (the eye’s transparent covering), culprit bacteria are found in the case."
